Overview

All skippers (drivers) and their crew members must be current financial members of the J/70 Australia Class Association Incorporated at the time of competing in races in the J/Cup Australia series.

Skippers carry eligibility not boats, therefore, a skipper may sail different boats in order to qualify.  Eligible skippers must either:

  • Hold World Sailing Group 1 categorization; or
  • With respect to World Sailing Group 3 sailor categorization, a skipper must own and have paid for 100% of a J/70 on the J/70 Australia Class Association Boat Register.  The J/70 Australia Executive Committee shall have the sole right to determine if a Group 3 sailor is a genuine owner.

There is no distinction between Open and Corinthian competitors in the selection.  Eligible skippers who hold the first five places in the J/Cup Australia overall results will be advised of their nomination to compete in the World Championship by the Executive Committee.  If an eligible skipper elects not to enter and pay for the World Championship entry within 30 days of being notified of nomination or receiving an invitation to compete from the J/70 International Class Association, which ever occurs last, the skipper’s place may be offered to the next highest placed skipper in the points score of the J/Cup Australia Series.

If a skipper cannot contest an event in the selection series because of a timing conflict due to competing in the 2025 J/70 World Championships, then that skipper may apply for average points for two events already sailed.

The Selection Series shall consist of the J/Cup Australia series and will be decided by competitors best results in three of the four events, using a low points scoring system.  Competitors may elect to discard their worst event score or only sail in three of the four events.

The J-Cup events are as follows:

J-Cup 1st event              2025 Australian Titles – 13th to 18th January 2025, Sandringham Yacht Club
