The French Village of Hyeres on the Mediterranean Sea hosted the 2022 J70 European Championship. 88 boats from 18 countries faced the starter for a very tricky regatta which started in 5 knots of breeze and finished with The Mistral arriving and forcing the last day to be abandoned. Only 7 of a possible 13 races were conducted.
Australian boat Vamos skippered by Tim Ryan finished 6th in the championship. Vamos won 1 of the 7 races sailed and generally had consistent results in a regatta where having wins and 60th placings on the scorecard was commonplace.
The early part of the regatta was very tricky. Finding lanes to sail in 6 knots with 87 boats wasn't easy. As the Mistral arrived on Day 4 racing became more exciting, with the last race sailed getting underway in 20+ knots. Vamos won the last race sailed for the regatta.
The Vamos crew comprised Rob Greenhalgh, Charlie Gundy and Will Sargent.
The 2022 J70 European Championship was eventually won by British Boat Calypso, from the USA's Rowdy and Turkish boat Eker Kaymak.
The fleet features most of the top boats that will compete at the 2022 World Championship in Monaco in October.
