CYCA’s Reg Lord dominated the inaugural Lowell North Memorial J70 Twilight Regatta hosted by the Squadron on Thursday evenings during October and November. Boats from RSYS, MHYC and CYCA contested the eight race series held over four evenings.
‘The racing was incredibly close and really fun’ said RSYS Captain Karyn Gojnich who joined the event for the last four races. ‘We had the harbour to ourselves, what better way is there to finish off the day? Thank you to Rob Ridley and the RSYS Race Management Team, they did a wonderful job. Thank you also to North Sails for supporting the regatta’ said Andrew Tompson, skipper of ‘Jabberwocky’ and President of the Australian J70 Association.
The J70, first launched in 2012, now boasts more than 1,500 boats worldwide and active fleets in 25 countries. The J70 was designed to fulfill a growing need for an easy-to-own, high performance one design that are exciting to sail, stable enough for the entire family, easy to tow behind the family vehicle, to rig in the car park, ramp launch and sail. Large fleets in Europe and North America are already competing in a full calendar of national and international regattas in both the summer and winter seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. The class also offers an excellent sailing pathway off the hardstand for sailors looking for a keelboat option, but without losing the thrill of speed and one design sailing, as well as the opportunity to compete in regattas around Australia and the world.
The next J70 Australian Championship is scheduled to be sailed from Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron on the Mornington Peninsula over Easter 2020.
