RSYS J/70 Summer Regatta

Published Mon 17 Feb 2025

The Sydney J70's completed 6 races on the weekend for the Summer Regatta.  It turned out to very a very challenging weekend of racing on the Harbour.

Saturday featured a light and very shifty South to South East breeze, while Sunday followed up with a fresh and shifty breeze, essentially from the same direction.

Racing proved to be very challenging for each of the 6 races.  Boats tended to pick a side of the course upwind, hoping to benefit from the bias that the breeze was bringing to both sides of the track.  The lead changed constantly over the weekend on the upwind legs as covering was proving to be very difficult.

In the end, Vamos took out the regatta with 6 wins.  Jabberwocky with Ben Williams steering took out second place on a countback from Jedi.

“It looked easy on the scorecard, but it was anything but.  We sailed well over the weekend, but the conditions were difficult and we never felt completely comfortable, with various boats challenging us in each race.

I've sailed a lot now with Jess Grimes and Charlie Gundy, and that teamwork probably proved to be the difference in the regatta.  We were also lucky to have Tom Grimes on board on Saturday and George Richardson on Sunday, both calling tactics.  All in all a very enjoyable yet challenging weekend" commented Vamos skipper Tim Ryan.
